Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS Treatment by Dr. Kiran Usman

PCOS, or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, is a hormonal imbalance that may disrupt your ovulation cycle and menstruation and can cause infertility. Some women also develop small, fluid-filled follicles, which contain immature eggs.

These eggs may not develop or become mature enough to be released during ovulation. With no egg available for fertilization, pregnancy cannot happen. This makes PCOS one of the common causes of infertility in women.

Dr. Kiran Usman, recognized as the best PCOS doctor in Lahore, provides personalized PCOS treatment for women struggling with weight gain, hirsutism, and infertility issues associated with hormonal imbalance.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Common PCOS Symptoms

PCOS doesn’t look the same in all women. However, some common symptoms that most women with this hormonal issue experience include:

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Irregular ovulation
  • Not being able to get pregnant naturally
  • Excess hair on face and body
  • Thinning hair
  • Hair loss
  • Dark patches in the groin, underarms, and neck
  • Acne
  • Rapid weight gain without trying and difficulty losing weight

These symptoms do not always mean PCOS. Sometimes, other hormonal issues could be the contributing factor, or there could be other underlying causes. This is why medical evaluation is important.

PCOS DIAGNOSIS

How is PCOS Diagnosed?

There is no single test that diagnoses PCOS. Dr. Kiran usually performs a combination of tests before confirming a diagnosis.

01

Your Medical History

Share your detailed medical and menstrual history, including how frequently you get periods, since when you have been trying to conceive, if you have acne or hair growth in unwanted areas, and sudden weight changes.

02

Blood Test

There are no specific PCOS blood tests, but certain tests may help detect androgen levels and other reproductive hormones. We may also advise a blood glucose test, as PCOS is linked to increased risk of insulin resistance.

03

Ultrasound

An ultrasound can be used to check your ovaries for signs of fluid-filled sacs. However, not every woman with PCOS has polycystic ovaries, which is why ultrasound alone may not confirm PCOS.

PCOS Treatment Options We Provide

PCOS treatment is individualized for each patient based on their symptoms, age, and fertility goals. Here’s what we may recommend.

Lifestyle Changes

Currently, there’s no cure for PCOS, but the symptoms can be managed so well that they may disappear. Simple lifestyle modifications can go a long way in managing your hormonal balance. You don’t need any drastic lifestyle changes.

Following healthy and sustainable eating habits, staying active, getting adequate sleep, managing stress, and most importantly, shedding extra pounds, are all effective tips for managing PCOS symptoms.

Medication

Hormonal contraceptives can be used to regulate your menstrual cycles and prevent the endometrial lining from thickening. The treatment also helps relieve androgen-related hair growth, acne, hair loss, and other symptoms. It’s an effective PCOS treatment choice for couples who aren’t planning pregnancy right now.

Insulin Sensitivity

Metformin is prescribed alongside other PCOS treatment medications to help improve insulin sensitivity, especially in women who have insulin resistance or are prediabetic. Metformin improves your body’s ability to handle insulin, which in turn reduces androgen levels and may eventually regulate ovulation.

Hormonal contraceptives might help with PCOS symptoms, but they are not for women planning pregnancy.

PCOS and Fertility — Can You Get Pregnant With PCOS?

Yes, pregnancy with PCOS is possible, but some women might face difficulty conceiving naturally because of irregular ovulation.

Normally, eggs developing inside follicles become mature and are released during ovulation. In PCOS, follicles containing the eggs develop but do not mature. This can disrupt ovulation. Pregnancy is not possible without ovulation.

PCOS is a treatable cause of infertility, although the exact treatment may vary depending on your individual diagnosis. Some conceive naturally with ovulation induction medication, while others may need additional fertility treatments, such as IVF.

Our PCOS fertility specialist evaluates both partners to determine the main cause of infertility before starting PCOS fertility treatment.

Letrozole is a commonly used ovulation-induction medication that lowers estrogen, signalling your brain to increase follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This encourages egg growth, thus helping regulate ovulation.

In some women, Clomiphene Citrate may be used alongside Metformin to induce ovulation. If these don’t work, a more advanced, injectable hormone, gonadotropin, may be needed to directly increase FSH and LH levels, thus promoting egg maturation and release.

IVF for PCOS-related Infertility: How It Works

When medication doesn’t work, or you have additional fertility issues, Assisted Reproductive Technology, such as IUI or IVF, may be advised.

IVF involves fertilizing a woman’s egg with her partner’s sperm outside her womb, in a special lab environment, where it’s nurtured until it’s ready to be transferred into the uterus. If the resulting embryo implants successfully, the pregnancy continues to grow normally.

Dr. Kiran Usman is not only the best gynecologist in Lahore for PCOS, but she also specializes in ART procedures. Having performed several IVF cycles, many of which resulted in pregnancies and live births, she can help you achieve your fertility goals.

When Should You See a Doctor for PCOS?

Visiting a PCOS doctor in Lahore makes sense when you are struggling with PCOS symptoms. Do not wait until you face difficulty getting pregnant or have absent periods for several months. Seek medical care if you notice these symptoms:

  • Irregular periods
  • Sudden and excessive hair growth on face, chest, or body
  • Acne
  • Dark, thickened patches of skin in your groin, underarms, inner thighs, or back or sides of the neck
  • Not getting pregnant despite having unprotected sexual intercourse for 12 months
  • Difficulty losing weight
