C-section, or Cesarean section, is a surgical procedure to deliver a baby through a large, horizontal or vertical incision in the abdomen and uterus. The procedure is advised when vaginal birth may carry an increased risk of maternal or fetal complications.
Dr. Kiran Usman, a qualified obstetrician and gynecologist, specializes in C-section delivery. She has safely delivered hundreds of babies with planned and emergency C-sections.
Renowned as the best hospital for C-section, cesarean delivery at Dr. Kiran’s Gynae Clinic is a straightforward procedure.
Dr. Kiran reviews your medical history, pregnancy details, and blood test results to determine if you are a good candidate for C-section.
Regional anesthesia is commonly used to numb your lower body. You stay awake throughout, but won’t feel anything. Less commonly, general anesthesia that puts you to sleep may be used for emergencies.
The surgeon makes an incision, which can be low-transverse, low-vertical, and, less commonly, a classical incision in your abdomen and the uterus.
The baby is gently taken out, the umbilical cord is cut, and the placenta is removed.
The incision is closed with stitches or staples.
The exact cesarean section time can vary between women, depending mostly on whether it’s a simple or complex procedure. In most cases, the entire procedure may take between 45-60 minutes from the beginning until closing the incision.
A C-section delivery can be elective or medically required, depending on you and your baby’s health.
You may be advised to have a C-section procedure if you have existing medical conditions that make vaginal birth risky, such as:
Previous C-Section
Vaginal Birth After C-section (VBAC) is widely performed when your pregnancy is progressing well, and you don’t have any medical issue that can make vaginal delivery unsafe. However, if you’ve had multiple C-sections, or a previous C-section with a vertical uterine incision, a gynecologist might recommend another C-section.
Breech Position
Breech position, i.e., feet-down-head-up, carries increased risk of complications during a vaginal birth attempt. If the baby doesn’t get into the head-first, bottom-up position around the delivery time, Dr. Kiran may recommend a C-section.
Cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD)
When a baby is extraordinarily large to fit through the mother’s pelvis, a C-section may be planned to prevent complications. It may also be needed if the mother’s pelvis is too narrow or abnormally shaped.
Health Issues
If you have existing medical conditions, such as heart issues, a C-section may be planned to ensure safe delivery.
Sometimes, your pregnancy goes on smoothly, but labor doesn’t progress properly, or complications arise during labor. Such cases require emergency cesarean delivery.
Labor Doesn’t Progress
When your cervix doesn’t efface or stops dilating despite having strong and regular contractions for hours, an emergency C-section may be performed. Sometimes, the cervix is dilated to 10 centimeters, but the baby won’t move down the birth canal despite constant pushing. This, too, requires a cesarean section.
Fetal Distress
A C-section might be performed immediately if your baby shows signs of distress, such as a low heartbeat or fewer movements. It may also be required if the umbilical cord slips through the cervix before the baby. This can cut off oxygen supply to the fetus, making an emergency C-section essential.
Uterine Rupture
Uterine rupture is a rare yet life-threatening complication during labor. It’s when the muscular wall of the uterus tears and the baby, along with the amniotic fluid and placenta, moves into the abdominal cavity, causing severe internal bleeding. An emergency C-section is needed to save both lives.
The biggest benefit of a C-section surgery is that it may be a safer delivery method when vaginal birth is not possible.
Risks
Cesarean section carries a comparatively higher risk than vaginal birth. Possible risks include:
Most women recover well after C-section, although it may take several weeks to feel normal. After surgery, you will stay in the hospital for 1-2 days or longer, depending on your condition.
Dr. Kiran will provide instructions for how to care for the wound and when to have the stitches removed, if they aren’t dissolvable. Internal pain after a C-section, or even back pain after a C-section, isn’t uncommon, but if it worsens or doesn’t relieve with pain medication, consult your surgeon.
You must follow C-section aftercare instructions, such as keeping the wound clean and dry, avoiding sexual intercourse for at least six weeks or until your surgeon confirms it’s safe, and avoiding heavy lifting or other activities that put stress on your abdomen.
C-section delivery charges can vary between clinics. The complete package includes the cost of medicines, tests, anesthesia, surgeon’s fee, hospital stay, and additional investigations if required. Dr. Kiran will explain the cost breakdown.
