IUI Treatment By Dr. Kiran Usman

IUI stands for Intrauterine insemination, also called artificial insemination. It’s a fertility treatment where specially prepared and concentrated sperm cells are injected directly into your uterus. Normally, sperm travel through your cervix into the fallopian tubes, where it fertilizes the egg.

IUI treatment makes this process more efficient by reducing the distance the sperm has to travel to reach the egg. This can boost the chances of fertilization and a successful pregnancy.

Who Is IUI Treatment Suitable For?

IUI treatment is for couples trying to get pregnant for several months without success. However, it may not be suitable for all cases of infertility. It can help if you have:

  • Cervical Mucus Problems: Women with thick cervical mucus might struggle to conceive because it can act as a barrier for sperm trying to swim toward the eggs. IUI places the sperm directly into the uterus, thus making this issue irrelevant.
  • Sperm-Factor Problems: IUI involves preparing the sperm by separating healthy sperm cells from the seminal fluid and immotile or abnormally shaped sperm. This increases motile sperm concentration, thus improving the odds of pregnancy in couples struggling with low sperm count or low motility.
  • Erection: Not being able to get or keep an erection is another possible reason why you may need IUI.

Our IUI Treatment Process

At Dr. Kiran’s Gynae Clinic, IUI is performed with care, while ensuring that you understand each step beforehand.

First Consultation

The procedure begins with a fertility assessment where Dr. Kiran examines you, orders ultrasounds, bloodwork, and other male or female-specific fertility tests. This gives us a clear picture of a woman’s ovarian reserve, ovulation, and her partner’s sperm health.

Ovarian Monitoring

The next step in IUI treatment in Lahore is ovulation monitoring, which can be done with home ovulation predictor kits that detect a surge in Luteinizing Hormone (LH). Or, you may get an ultrasound test, which shows follicular growth.

Some women ovulate naturally, while others might be given ovarian stimulation drugs to stimulate multiple follicle development. If fertility medicines were used for ovarian induction, a trigger shot is needed to mature the eggs.

Sperm Sample Collection

Around the same time, a sperm sample is collected and washed to concentrate good-quality, motile, and normal-shaped sperm, while removing undesirable components from the sample.

IUI

The final step is intrauterine insemination, which is fairly quick and is performed in an outpatient setting. A thin catheter is inserted through the cervix, into the uterus, where the concentrated sperm is released.

Pregnancy Test

You may be advised to take progesterone supplements after IUI to maintain your uterine lining and support early pregnancy. You can take either a home pregnancy test two weeks following the procedure or visit Dr. Kiran for a blood test for pregnancy confirmation.

IUI Risks

Despite being a straightforward procedure, IUI isn’t risk-free. Serious complications, such as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), are less common, but possible if fertility drugs were used for ovarian induction. Other side effects include:

  • Mild cramping
  • Light spotting
  • Medication-related side effects, such as headaches, bloating, or breast tenderness
  • Risk of multiple pregnancies (if multiple follicles grow in response to ovarian stimulation)

Dr. Kiran will discuss these risks in detail before proceeding with the IUI procedure.

IUI Success Rate

IUI success rate can vary between clinics and couples. The success rate heavily relies on the woman’s age, egg and sperm quality, underlying fertility issues, and ovulation.

Your cause of infertility also matters. Couples with unexplained infertility or mild infertility issues, such as a slightly lower sperm count than normal, might have a comparatively higher success rate than those with severe reproductive issues.

IUI vs IVF — Which Treatment Is Right?

IUI and IVF are modern ART procedures that have helped millions of couples in the world achieve their dream of parenthood. But how do you choose between the two? Both involve different steps and come with varying price tags.

IUI involves direct injection of concentrated sperm into your uterus. IVF, on the other hand, is a more complex process. It starts with ovarian stimulation and involves many steps in between until the eggs are fertilized and transferred into the uterus.

IUI is usually for mild infertility issues, when fallopian tubes are open. IVF bypasses the fallopian tubes altogether. For women with tubal blockage or damaged tubes, this could be an ideal treatment choice. It may also work for those with severe male-factor infertility, reduced ovarian reserve, or previous unsuccessful IUI cycles.

There’s no single better treatment. What may work for you depends on your reproductive health, medical history, pregnancy history, and the cause of infertility.
