High-Risk Pregnancy Management at Dr. Kiran’s Gynae Clinic

Pregnancy can be a smooth journey for some mothers, while others may require close monitoring. When your pregnancy is tagged as “high-risk”, you may have many concerns. Frequent visits to the maternity center, frequent ultrasound scans, and lifestyle changes can all take a toll on your mental and physical health.

At Dr. Kiran’s Gynae Clinic, high-risk pregnancy is viewed as a pregnancy requiring extra care. She believes each woman has a unique pregnancy journey, so prenatal care at our clinic mainly focuses on identifying pregnancy problems early on and personalizing treatment based on your and your baby’s health.

Who May Need High-Risk Pregnancy Care?

High-risk pregnancy doesn’t automatically mean you’ll have complications, but it’s associated with a higher risk of maternal or fetal health problems than a normal pregnancy.

Some pregnancies are seen as high-risk from the beginning because of the known risk factors. Others are labeled high-risk later because of complications developing in your first, second, or third trimesters. Here’s what makes a pregnancy high-risk.

Maternal Health Conditions

If you have one or more of these conditions, you may require close monitoring because of the increased risk associated with pregnancy, labor, or delivery.

  • High blood pressure or hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Heart or kidney diseases
  • Autoimmune disorders, such as lupus
  • Fibroids
  • Obesity
  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • endometriosis
  • HIV/AIDS

Pregnancy-related Complications

Some complications develop during pregnancy, such as:

  • Preeclampsia or previous history of preeclampsia
  • Placenta previa, accreta, and other placental issues
  • Heavy bleeding during pregnancy
  • Fetal growth restriction
  • Multiple pregnancy (twins or more)
  • Previous preterm delivery
  • Excess or very little amniotic fluid
  • Gestational diabetes

Pregnancy History

Sometimes, high-risk pregnancy complications in your previous pregnancies might occur in subsequent pregnancies. That’s why Dr. Kiran pays special attention to your reproductive and pregnancy history. You may require high-risk pregnancy management if you have:

  • Previous miscarriage or recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Previous stillbirth or neonatal loss
  • Previous preterm birth or low birth weight baby
  • Previous complicated pregnancy or delivery
  • Previous cesarean section, especially if it was conducted for a reason that may affect your current pregnancy

A history of complications in your previous pregnancy doesn’t mean you’ll experience them in subsequent pregnancies.

However, your OB-GYN will still closely monitor you to identify potential issues before they can cause maternal or fetal health complications.

Advanced Maternal Age

Pregnancy at an advanced maternal age, i.e., in women above 35 years old, is considered high-risk because of the increased risk of miscarriage, genetic disorders in the baby, and other health complications.

That said, high-risk pregnancy age isn’t just based on a specific number, but on combined factors, including your reproductive and pregnancy history, existing medical conditions, and ovarian reserve.

Signs That Require Immediate Medical Attention

Certain symptoms during pregnancy must never be ignored or left until your next follow-up date. They do not necessarily indicate a complication, but it’s better to see Dr. Kiran immediately just to be safe.

  • Severe cramps, pelvic pain, or contraction-like pain before your due date
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Severe headaches, particularly if they occur with vision issues, such as blurred vision
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Your water breaking
  • Dizziness
  • Fever and chills
  • Significant swelling on the feet, hands, legs, and other body parts, especially when accompanied by other concerning symptoms
  • Less frequent or no fetal movements (after they are established)

How We Assess and Monitor High-Risk Pregnancies

High-risk pregnancy management at Dr. Kiran’s Gynae Clinic isn’t about ordering every possible test, but individualizing your treatment plan based on your health, medical reports, and medical history. Dr. Kiran may use these methods to determine high-risk pregnancies:

01

Pregnancy History

Your existing health, previous pregnancies, history of C-sections or other surgeries, Previous IVF or other ART treatments, and complications you developed in earlier pregnancies can all help identify your risk profile.

02

Physical Check-up

We check your vitals, including blood pressure, pulse, weight, and other metrics throughout your pregnancy. It helps us identify possible complications, such as pre-eclampsia, early on.

03

Blood and Urine Tests

Blood tests can be used to assess your blood sugar levels and detect anemia, infections, and other relevant issues, while urine tests can help assess your kidney function.

04

Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds are scheduled in the first, second, and third trimesters to check various fetal-related parameters, placental location, amniotic fluid, baby’s position, and their anatomy.
